Before the world was created, there was a beautiful angel named Lucifer. Lucifer was full of pride and wanted to be more important than God. When Lucifer rebelled against God he could no longer stay in heaven where everything is holy and pure and so he was cast out and is now God's enemy. His name was changed to Satan and his goal is to keep people from knowing, loving and obeying God. Satan did not want Jesus to grow up and give His life to pay for our sins. Only God is all knowing and powerful!
Immediately after Jesus was baptized, the Holy Spirit led Him into the wilderness. Jesus went 40 days without food, during this time He spent alone with God. He would have been very hungry and a little tired. Satan came along to tried to get Jesus to sin against God. Satan hated Jesus because he knew that one day Jesus would become the Saviour and save people from their sin. If Satan could get Jesus to sin than He could never be the Saviour of the world. Satan tried to tempt Jesus 3 times (Matthew 4:1-11):
1) Knowing that Jesus was hungry, Satan said, "If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread." Jesus answered, "It is written:
"Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God."
2) Then Satan took Jesus to the highest point of the temple and said, "If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down. For it is written: "He will
command his angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone." Jesus answered,
"It is also written: "Do not put the Lord your God to the test."
3) The devil took Jesus to a very high mountain and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and said, "All this I will give you, if you will bow down
and worship me." Jesus said to him, "Away from me, Satan! For it is written: "Worship the Lord your God, and serve Him only."
Each time Satan tried to tempt Jesus, even when he tried to twist God's Word, Jesus answered with the Word of God and not His own thoughts and ideas. Satan then left Jesus and angels came to minister to Him.
Just For You:
Jesus really understands what it is like to be temped, so He knows what we go through when we are temped. Jesus had victory over Satan's temptations by using the Word of God. That is why it is so important for you to learn and to memorize God's Word.
Memory Verse:
"For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." Mark 10:45
