History of Elgin Area Bible Club
In 1946 the Bible club had its beginning with home Bible Clubs in St. Thomas taught by Alma Houghton (1925-2010). Children from the area also participated in a half hour radio program on C.H.L.O. called the "Happy Day Express". Gord & Alma were also involved in a large club of 70-80 Japanese children at the Fingal Air Base.
In 1969 all the school boards in Elgin were consolidated and in 1972 the new board legislated that all classes should have Religious Education. In 1987 a court case was launched against the Elgin County Board of Education by the Canadian Civil Liberites' Association along with some parents to exclude Christian teaching from the schools. The Elgin Board won the first trial but lost in the Appeal. In the late 80's the Lord's Prayer was removed and on January 31, 1990 Bible teaching was taken from the schools in Ontario.
Believing that the Lord brought EABC into existence to give His Word to children, one year later, January 31, 1991, the Elgin ABC Clubs had their beginning. Our aim was to provide a club for every school in Elgin County & for the past several years God has provided the doors to be open to accomplish this!
